Mass Spectrometer

Why must there be a vacuum pump?
* to avoid the positive ions from hitting/colliding with the air particles

*Vapourisation chamber
All states are changed in gaseous form
*Ionisation chamber
Electron gun produces high stream of energy which knock off an electron from the atom(g) so that it is positively charged.
*Acceleration Chamber
Positively charged Ions are attracted to the negatively charged plates.Positive Ions are accelerated and move in a higher and constant velocity towards the end of the mass spectromater
*Deflecting Chamber
Positive ions are deflected by the magnetic field depending on its mass/charge ratio. The lower the mass/charge ratio, the higher and faster the deflection
*Detector
When Positive ions hits the detector, signals are produced.
*Amplifier
Amplifies Signal
*Recoder
Records signal
